Diabetic Supplies

The Diabetes Dayton is a local 501(c)3 non-profit agency that serves the Dayton area residents afflicted with diabetes. The program includes free AADE-accredited education classes, wellness series and cooking classes, emergency supply assistance, a resource diabetes guide pdf file, and camp for children with diabetes type I. The Diabetes Dayton organization mission is to help those affected by the disease with what they need immediately, in order to live healthy, productive lives every day. In addition to the above services, Diabetes Dayton provides the medical service of A1C blood screening at reduce prices and faster returned of the reading that the individual can share with their medical provider.

The Diabetes Dayton Emergency Supply Assistance Program (DESAP) is able to provide assistance with free diabetes testing supplies (monitors, test strips, lancets, syringes, pen needles, pump supplies, alcohol wipes and sharps containers) one to two times per year for those in need, but regrettably are not able to assist with insulin or oral medications.  Clients may be eligible for assistance with insulin and/or medications from other organizations in the state of Ohio such as Health Centers of Greater Dayton, Five Rivers Health Centers, Living Well Clinic, and other centers. The Dayton Diabetes Center provides the later information to clients, facilitating the walk through the maze of the diabetes disease.

The Diabetes Dayton organization offers help to anyone affected by diabetes, pre-diabetes, Insulin resistance, or metabolic disorders.  Every person or family affected by diabetes is welcome to utilize their assistance.  The facility has few registered dieticians with the role of providing free education classes and individual nutrition counseling, provided the individual has a referral from a medical provider.  The classes offered are broken down into three categories call Class 101 and Class 102. Class 101 includes the following topics: Explanation of the disease, monitoring properly, taking medications and insulin, treating highs and lows, and introduction to meal planning.  Class 102 includes the following topics: three steps of eating well, understanding carbs, choosing foods and reading labels, extras: sugar substitutes, alcohol, discretionary food and exercise. The last class offered is about stress management addressing the topics of the connections between diabetes and stress, and tips for recognizing and improving symptoms.

Camps for children are offered in the summer by Diabetes Dayton and are tailored to meet the needs of children suffering from diabetes Type I. The children can enjoy a variety of camp activities such as swimming, hiking, campfires, wall-climbing, archery, horseback riding, field games and culminating with a dance on the last evening. In addition to making new friends who are living with diabetes like themselves, diabetes education is woven into the fun, helping the children to become more knowledgeable and better skilled about how to manage their diabetes.  I was surprised by Diabetes Dayton, level of visionary organization to include the children that will become adults in the future.  Empowering through education is not a simple task, but a much needed approach to implement self-efficacy in the adults of the future. The staff of Diabetes Dayton is friendly and willing to help patients/clients understand their condition. In addition, the level of marketing to reach out to the public asking for donations and events to promote and educate about their organization is really impressive.  Word of mouth, networking, newsletter, social media, website, private, federal and state grants are all a means to noble ending.
